Why can an NGC-certified coin be worth more?

Two seemingly identical coins, with the same date and mintmark, can sometimes sell for dramatically different prices. In many cases, the difference is not immediately visible. One coin has been independently certified and encapsulated by NGC, while the other has not.

NGC, or Numismatic Guaranty Company, is one of the world’s leading independent coin grading services. During the grading process, a coin is examined for authenticity and condition, then encapsulated in a secure holder displaying its key identification details and grade.

This does not mean that every certified coin automatically becomes more valuable. The real importance of grading lies in reducing uncertainty — something that can be particularly valuable in the international collector and investment market.

What does NGC certification add to a coin?

One of the main advantages is an independent expert assessment. NGC does not buy or sell coins, so it has no direct financial interest in presenting a coin as better than it actually is. The grade shown on the holder is therefore not the seller’s own opinion, but the assessment of an independent third party.

Authentication is just as important. Counterfeits represent a serious risk in the market for rare and valuable coins, and modern copies can sometimes be difficult to identify without specialist knowledge. Authentication is therefore a fundamental part of the NGC grading process.

Condition is another key factor. Traditional descriptive grades such as EF, aUNC or UNC can be interpreted somewhat differently from one dealer or market to another. NGC uses the 70-point Sheldon scale, providing a more standardized and internationally comparable grading system. An MS63 grade represents the same numerical grade whether the coin is being offered in Budapest, Vienna or the United States.

This matters because even a difference of just a few grading points can have a significant impact on the market value of certain coins.

Rarity, protection and marketability

Certification can also make it easier to place a coin within the international market. The publicly available NGC Census shows how many examples of a particular coin have been certified and the grades they received. This can help establish how scarce a specific coin may be at a particular grade.

This information can be especially important at the higher end of the collector market. There is a major difference between a coin for which hundreds of similarly graded examples are known and one that ranks among the highest-graded certified examples of its type.

The holder also provides physical protection. It helps protect the coin from handling damage, fingerprints, scratches and certain environmental influences. This is particularly relevant for high-grade, mint-state coins, where even minor damage may affect the grade and, as a result, the market value.

Certified coins may also be easier to sell. A buyer in another country may not have the opportunity to inspect a coin in person, but an internationally recognized grading system provides a common reference point. As a result, a certified coin can be easier for a wider range of collectors to evaluate and compare, which may also improve its liquidity.

Not every coin should be submitted for grading

Grading does not create value by itself. A common coin in average condition will not automatically become valuable simply because it is encapsulated. For lower-value pieces, the cost of grading may not be justified.

There is also a degree of grading risk. If a coin receives a lower grade than expected, this may negatively affect its market value. The same applies if the coin receives a “Details” designation because of cleaning, scratches or another problem. Before grading, there may be room for differing opinions about condition. Once the coin is certified, however, the assigned grade or designation becomes clearly visible to every future buyer.
